June Bird was born in Utopia, NT in 1958. Her mother was a well-known artist and her works were procured by many galleries and private collectors. Her father, Lindsay Bird, is well known for his carpet snake painting. June learnt painting from her parents. She is a quiet and passionate artist, and her artworks feature in many Government galleries and private collections.June speaks ?Ammatyerre' Aboriginal language. She inherited her dreaming ?Bush Plum' from her parents.Body Painting is an ancient traditional art that has been carried out for thousands of years. Even nowadays it continues to be a strong and vital part of contemporary Aboriginal culture. The type of body painting varies between tribes and regions of Australia. Awelye is the Aboriginal name of body painting. Body painting, decoration and personal adornment traditionally carry deep spiritual significance to Aboriginal people. In most cases body painting must conform to respected social and historical patterns. People are not free to change their appearance. A get-together function or corroboree does not receive the green light until elders are satisfied that the participants are capable of fulfilling their obligations.
